New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony and Oklahoma City Thunder Kevin Durant’s are among the headline names in the 12-strong squad, which also features four of America's title-winning side from the 2014 International Basketball Association (FIBA) World Cup - DeMarcus Cousins, DeMar DeRozan, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson.

Completing the team is Harrison Barnes, Jimmy Butler, Paul George, Draymond Green, DeAndre Jordan and Kyle Lowry.

With his selection to the team, three-time Olympic medallist Anthony becomes the first male basketball player selected for four separate Games.

Durant, who collected Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours in leading the US to gold at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and finished as his country's leading scorer at London 2012 by averaging a US Olympic record of 19.5 points a game, has been named on his second Olympic team.

Jordan was selected in the 2015-2016 All-NBA first team line-up, while Cousins, Durant and Green were second team choices, and George, Lowry and Thompson were third team picks.

Additionally, Jordan and Green collected 2015-16 NBA All-Defensive first team honours with Butler and George second team selections.

Nine players - Anthony, Butler, Cousins, DeRozan, Durant, George, Green, Lowry and Thompson - were named as 2016 NBA All-Stars, while Irving, who was named MVP of the 2014 World Cup after helping lead the Americans to gold, recently helped Cleveland Cavaliers capture the 2016 NBA championship.

The 2016 US coaching staff is led by Mike Krzyzewski, who since being named in 2005 head mentor of the national team programme has compiled a 75-1 record and led the country to 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medals and 2010 and 2014 FIBA World Cup titles.

He will leave after the Olympics following a decade in the job with Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs set to replace him after Rio 2016. 

He will be assisted by Jim Boeheim, Monty Williams and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau.

"I'm anxious to get on the court, and along with my great coaching staff, get to work," said Krzyzewski, who by serving as head coach of his third Olympic squad is now tied with Henry Iba for the record.

"Since 2006 and including the last two Olympics, our players have represented themselves, the game and our country in an exemplary manner.

"I know this team will continue that standard.

"Looking at this team, our overall balance is what strikes me.

"We have lightning-quick guards who can score as well as distribute the basketball.

"We have great shooters and explosive scorers, we're big and athletic, and I think we'll really be able to defend."

The team was approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors and is pending final approval by the United States Olympic Committee.

The US will play in Group A with Venezuela, China, Australia and two of the teams that win FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, scheduled to take place in Belgrade, Pasay and Turin from July 4 to 10.

Jerry Colangelo, who has served as managing director of the US men’s national team since 2005, added: "I think I can speak for the entire coaching staff and say we're extremely excited about the team we will field for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.  

"I love our depth, which is another indication of the depth of talent our national team program is blessed with.

"We've got a great mix of talent, scorers, past gold medal winners and outstanding youth."

Steph Curry, the NBA's MVP, had already ruled himself out citing injuries picked up in the season as the reasons behind his decision.

Irving's Cleveland Cavaliers team-mate LeBron James also withdrew this month, saying he could "use the rest".

The Americans are due to play five warm-up games before the start of the men's Olympic tournament on August 6.
