US Paralympics has launched a "Gateway to Gold" app aimed at giving aspiring Paralympic athletes the opportunity to take the first steps towards achieving their goal.

The app allows Paralympic hopefuls to watch sport demonstration videos, test their skills and then submit their own videos directly to US Paralympics coaches.

Athletes will then receive follow-up steps that may include connections to local training programmes, coaching, competition or other performance opportunities.

The app also includes a welcome from 11-time Paralympic medallist Tatyana McFadden, who walks users through the interface.

The Russian-born American’s video introduction can be viewed by clicking here.

The Gateway to Gold app includes sport testing for cycling, Para-triathlon, powerlifting, swimming and track and field.

Others are soon to be added to the app, which is available for free on Android and iOS platforms.

Its launch follows that of the official US Paralympics app in September, aimed at engaging fans in the lead up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and beyond.

In May, a free "Gateway to Gold Experience" recruiting and educational event was held in Atlanta in an effort to encourage potential Paralympians to improve and take up athletics.

Jointly held by BlazeSports America in conjunction with US Paralympics, the "Gateway to Gold Experience" is targeted at those who already compete at a high level and are targeting Rio 2016, as well as beginners with longer term aims.

A similar event was held in Utica in New York City last month, while the next is scheduled for Anchorage on Saturday (July 30).
