The International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Skiing Big Air World Cup 2016-17 season will begin tomorrow with Chile hosting an event at this level for the first time in 50 years.

A top field will head to El Colorado in the South American country for both men's and women's competitions.

On the women's side, the reigning overall slopestyle World Cup winner, Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen of Norway, will be among the favourites, with Switzerland's former slopestyle world champion Fabian Böesch one to watch on the men's side.

"Chile is currently an active country in the world of freestyle, thus bringing this international event is of vital importance to our athletes, because they can train and compete with the best in the world," said Jorge Mandru, Director of the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard Federation of Chile.

"It also motivates new generations to practice this discipline."

Action will begin tomorrow with qualification rounds for women, before the men's qualifiers on Saturday (September 3).

Both finals will also take place on Saturday.

"With the Big Air World Cup 2016 we want to bring the skiing competition of the highest level back to Chile," said the event's general producer Hernán Román.

"Our objective is to host a winter sport festival with competitions recognised by the International Ski Federation."

After El Colorado, the Big Air World Cup will head to Milan, with competition in the Italian city on November 11.

Mönchengladbach in Germany will host on December 2, with Quebec City in Canada and Myrkdalen-Voss in Norway rounding off the season on February 11 and March 24 respectively.
