Brazil won the rearranged Challenge Cup competition as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Nations Cup Jumping Final belatedly concluded in Barcelona today.

The competition, for countries which finished ninth to 18th in the first round and failed to reach the grand final, was postponed on Friday (September 23) due to thunderstorms at the Real Club de Polo.

Organisers hastily rearranged the event for today, with the grand final taking place as planned yesterday.

Brazil, who finished fifth at their home Rio 2016 Olympic Games and narrowly missed out on a medal, won the event with a total of 12 faults.

The South Americans only missed out on the grand final by a single second and were indebted to Pedro Veniss, who produced the only clear round of the entire Challenge Cup on stallion Quabri de L’Isle.

“We were disappointed to miss the final by just one second, but then we got our thoughts together and approached this competition with a lot of will to do well and to come out on top," said Brazil's former Olympic and world champion, Rodrigo Pessoa.

Qatar claimed second place with 16 faults as Colombia finished third on 18.

Olympic champions France continued their event to forget by finishing equal fourth on 21 faults after surprisingly failing to reach the overall final.

Rio 2016 gold medallist Penelope Leprevost had returned home after Friday's cancellation, but made the trip back to Barcelona when the event was rescheduled.

She was her country's best performer, collecting one fault, but her team still finished on the same tally as hosts Spain.

Germany won yesterday's grand final, prevailing after a thrilling jump-off with Great Britain.
