World number one Mohamed El Shorbagy continued his progress at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Men’s World Championship by winning an all-Egyptian contest with Karim Ali Fathi at the Wadi Degla Club in Cairo.

El Shorbagy had not dropped a game in his opening two matches of the tournament and he continued his fine form by outplaying Fathi.

The top seed claimed the opening game of the match 11-3 to take full control of the contest but Fathi put in an improved display in the remaining games.

He was, however, still beaten 11-3, 11-6, 11-9 by El Shorbagy.

El Shorbagy will look to keep his hopes of winning a first world title alive when he takes on another Egyptian in Ali Farag in the quarter-finals.

Farag had ended the challenge of Miguel Angel Rodriguez, beating the Colombian 11-4, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7 in their third round meeting.

Nick Matthew, a three-time winner of the tournament, advanced to the quarter-finals by earning a win over Germany’s Simon Rösner.

The English star had never lost to Rösner during their nine meetings to date and extended that record as he came from behind to win 6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10.

"I was gearing up for a worst case scenario and going 2-0 down, but I still believe I could have done it if I was 2-0 down," Matthew said.

"I obviously didn't want to go 2-0 down, that second game was crucial and maybe a turning point. I certainly felt more in control after that second game, it settled me down a bit."

Matthew is now due to meet Egypt’s Karim Abdel Gawad for a place in the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Gawad lost the opening game of his match against Hong Kong’s Max Lee but hit back to win 7-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-6.

The remaining third round matches are scheduled to take place tomorrow.
