Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallists Fiji and Australia both secured overall victories on their respective returns to competitive action at the Oceania Sevens Championships at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.

The Fijians, winners of their country’s first-ever Olympic medal of any colour, won all four of their matches on day one yesterday and continued their dominant form in the men's tournament today.

The hosts won the overall title courtesy of a 28-19 win over Samoa in the final.

Earlier in the day, Fiji only had one pool stage match left to play and they overcame Australia 19-7 to secure top spot in Group A.

Samoa secured their place in the final as they tore through their opponents, securing a 100 per cent record yesterday.

In their opening contest today the Samoans cruised past New Caledonia 31-0, while they secured their place at the top of Group B, and their place in the final, after defeating Papua New Guinea 17-12 in extra time.

Australia, winners of the first-ever women’s Olympic rugby sevens gold medal at Rio 2016, were also successful today as they coasted to gold.

After winning all of their three matches yesterday, Australia cemented their place at the stop of the standings with a 47-0 demolition of Samoa and a 39-0 win over Papua New Guinea.

A 31-0 win over Fiji then guaranteed them top spot in the women's group and the overall victory.

Fiji, who scored an impressive 118 points while conceding a mere five on day one, claimed second place.

Despite losing to Australia, the hosts defeated the Cook Islands 34-0 and the Solomon Islands 66-0 today.

Attention now turns to the opening World Rugby Sevens Series event of the season, scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 2 and 3.
