The Cyprus National Olympic Academy hosted its 28th annual session on the theme of "the impact of sport on social health".

More than 150 people took part with Constantinos Psimopoulos, a Harvard University professor, providing the keynote speech.

He analysed how physical activity can be used to prevent disease and promote health and wellness in society.

Other speakers included Diamantis Mastrogiannakis, a professor of sociology at the University of Seattle, and Ioannis Mouzas, a professor of gastroenterology.

Dimitris Iakovides, a professor of molecular biology, was another to take to the stand.

The event concluded with round table discussions where the speakers answered questions.

Cyprus sent a team of 16 athletes to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in August, with the country's squad competing across seven sports.

However, Cypriot athletes failed to win a medal meaning that the nation has stood on an Olympic podium just once in its history.

Their sole medal winner is sailor Pavlos Kontides, who won silver in the men's laser event at London 2012.
