Radomir Proshchenko and Ekaterina Koshcheeva triumphed in the men's and women's speed duel finals at the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Cup in Beijing.

The day was dominated by Russian athletes, with the semi-finals of both the events comprising entirely of climbers from the country.

Proshchenko would reach the final of the men’s event by ending in 21.97 seconds across the two rounds, with his compatriot Nikolay Shved finishing five seconds off his pace.

The second semi-final saw Vladimir Kartashev fend off the challenge of Nikolai Kuzovlev by triumphing in 24.62sec.

Kartashev was unable to replicate his achievement in the final as his time of 25.83sec was not enough to beat Proshchenko, with his fellow Russian clocking 24.07sec for the win.

The third place contest saw Shved finish in a winning time of 26.68sec, with Kuzovlev ending three seconds back.

There would be further Russian success in the women’s event as Koshcheeva defeated her team-mate Maria Tolokonina in the final.

It would be a fairly comfortable victory for Koshcheeva as her time of 28.59sec would prove to be nearly seven seconds quicker than her rival.

Nadezhda Gallyamova would win the duel for third place in 39.76sec, after Ekaterina Feoktistova failed to complete the first run of the event.

The finals for lead events are due to take place tomorrow and will bring the World Cup event in the Chinese capital to a close.

A total of five World Cup stages will take place ahead of the UIAA World Championships, which will be held in Champagny-en-Vanoise in France from February 4 to 5.

The next leg of the World Cup will be held in Cheongsong, South Korea, on January 14 and 15.
