Canada won both their matches on the opening day of the 2017 World Curling Federation (WCF) World Women's Curling Championships at the Capital Gymnasium in Beijing, earning them the outright lead at the top of the round-robin standings.

Skip Rachel Homan set the North American nation on their way to victory over hosts China in the first session, opening the scoring in the second end with a hit for four points.

The home nation were unable to recover from the early blow as Canada came out 9-3 winners.

"That was a really good [second] end by my team with a lot of big shots," Homan said.

"We hadn’t played on that ice yet so we were kind of guessing on some lines and played some pretty good shots.

"We’re trying to learn as we go.

"They took us right to the ninth and it was just a game of a shot here or there."

Canada followed up their win by beating Germany 6-2 in the second session.

Homan was influential once more, raising one of her own stones into a scoring position in the fourth end and taking out a German stone to score one point for a 3-1 lead that proved to be decisive.

Scotland defeated the United States 9-8 after an extra end, while Switzerland began their quest for a fourth consecutive crown by overcoming Germany 7-5.

Czech Republic were eventual 6-5 winners over Denmark and Russia were 9-6 victors at the expense of South Korea.

The US bounced back from their defeat to Scotland to claim a 10-8 victory over Sweden, who had earlier beaten Italy 7-4.
