Australia beat hosts the United States 10-7 in the final of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Women's Water Polo Intercontinental Tournament at the University of California in Davis today.

The victory, which was sealed by three unanswered goals late in the fourth quarter, came less than 24 hours after the Australians had lost to the US in a round-robin shoot-out and ended their opponents' unbeaten record.

Goals from Paige Hauschild and Jewel Roemer had drawn the US level at 7-7 in the final stanza, but Elle Armit’s fourth goal of the game and Keesja Gofers' second and third ensured Australia’s triumph.

"It’s always a tough game because of it being a rivalry between two big, strong physical teams," Armit said.

"I'm really proud.

"We learned from yesterday.

"We were making sure our defence was solid, and making more attacks and not wasting them."

Also on the scoresheet for Australia were Rowie Webster, who registered a brace to finish as the top scorer with 18 goals, and Hannah Buckling.

Hauschild and Roemer each scored twice for the US, as did Aria Fischer.

Melissa Seidemann, the event's Most Valuable Player, opened their tally.

Canada defeated Japan 5-2 in the bronze medal match, while Kazakhstan took fifth place by overcoming China 14-7.

As the top four teams, Australia, the US, Canada and Japan have qualified for the FINA World League Super Final in Shanghai from June 6 to 11.

Hungary, The Netherlands and Russia have already booked a place at the event in the Chinese city through European qualifying.

Action is due to take place in Shanghai between June 6 and 11.
