More than 220 athletes are set to appear in 's-Hertogenbosch for the sixth annual World Pole Sports Championships.

The event organised by the International Pole Sport Federation (IPSF) is due to begin at the Maaspoort Sport in the Dutch city tomorrow with competition continuing until Sunday (July 2) with 36 countries being represented.

Titles will be available in a wide range of categories from junior to senior level and for the first time a Para pole competition will be held as part of the event.

The Championships come at a time when the IPSF are seeking to gain recognition from both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).

Leaders of the governing body have had meetings with their counterparts at the IOC and GAISF with the aim to eventually be featured on the Olympic sports programme.

"As the umbrella organisation of all of pole sports, the IPSF has fully embrace that, like every sport, we must always continue to evolve," said IPSF President Katie Coates.

"In that light, we will introduce new disciplines over the next few years, giving pole sports the edge it needs to work alongside other well-known and established sports."

Along with the competitions, a series of workshops will also be conducted during the event.
