A record 10,000 athletes are expected to take part in the 20th edition of the Maccabiah Games in Jerusalem.

The multi-sport event, often referred to as the "Jewish Olympics", is expected to feature athletes from 80 countries.

More than 7,000 Jewish athletes are expected to join 2,500 Israeli athletes in Jerusalem for the event.

Organisers are claiming the 20th anniversary edition will be world’s third-largest sporting event after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.

Athletics, archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, bridge, chess, cricket, cycling and equestrian are among the 43 sports which will be contested at the Games.

Fencing, hockey, football, fustal, golf, gymnastics, half marathon, handball, ice hockey, judo, karate, lacrosse, lawn bowls, netball and aquatics competitions will also be held, along with table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, wrestling and volleyball.

Wheelchair basketball and tennis are among the Paralympic sports which will also be contested.

The Games’ Opening Ceremony is due to take place tomorrow at the Teddy Stadium.

Preliminary competition has already begun in several sports.

The Games are due to take place until July 18.
