Russia will seek to defend their World Mixed Curling Championship title when competition begins in Champéry in Switzerland.

The Russian team are one of a record number of 38 squads set to take part in the Championship, due to run from Friday (October 6) until October 14.

Teams have been split into five groups for the opening stage of the competition, with Hong Kong and Luxembourg due to make their debuts.

Russia are scheduled to begin their title defence by facing Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Japan, Slovenia and Wales in Group A.

Belarus, Brazil, France, Italy, Latvia, Sweden and the United States will compete in Group B, while Denmark, Spain, Ireland, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Scotland will go head-to-head in Group C.

Switzerland will aim to progress from Group D, with the host nation due to take on Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hong Kong, Israel, Norway and Slovakia.

The final group will feature Australia, Canada, China, England, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Turkey.

Round robin competition will begin on Friday with Switzerland among the nations getting their campaign underway.

They will face the Czech Republic in front of their home crowd.

Russia will begin their title defence the following day when they meet Croatia.

A total of 26 sessions will take place during the round robin stage of the event, with the final draw then set to take place on October 12.

Two rounds of last 16 matches will be held the following day, with quarter-finals being held in the evening.

Semi-finals will take place in the morning on October 14, before the gold and bronze medal ties in the afternoon.

Teams will consist of two female and two male athletes, with the event having been open entry to all World Curling Federation member associations.

It will be the third edition of the Championships, with Norway and Russia having won the 2015 and 2016 events.

Both nations beat Sweden in their respective finals.
