India's first appearance in a major FIFA tournament was one to forget as they were comfortably beaten in their opening match of the Under-17 World Cup on home soil.

The hosts opened their campaign against the United States in Group A but the Americans ran riot, claiming a 3-0 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Josh Sargent opened the scoring for the US from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark.

After being fouled in the box by Jitendra Singh, the American captain dusted himself off to slam home the penalty.

The US doubled their lead shortly after the break when Chris Durkin struck home a corner that deflected past India goalkeeper Dheeraj Moirangthem.

The Americans wrapped up a convincing victory on 84 minutes through Andrew Carleton, moments after India struck the crossbar with their best chance of the match.

Elsewhere in Group A, Ghana made a winning start to their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Colombia at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Both teams had chances to take the lead but it was not until the 39th minute that the West Africans made the decisive breakthrough.

A fine counter-attack saw Black Starlets captain Eric Ayiah make an incisive run down the left before delivering a low cross that Sadiq Ibrahim converted at the far post.

In Group B, Paraguay and Mali played out a thriller this evening with the South Americans running out 3-2 winners after Alan Rodriguez converted the winning penalty in the second half.

The first half of the match, at the DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai, was played at a frantic pace with four goals in 22 minutes.

Paraguay went 2-0 in front after some poor defending by the Africans with Antonio Galeano and Leonardo Sanchez finding the net.

The Malians struck back within minutes as Hadji Drame controlled the ball on the edge of the area and blasted into the net.

Lassana N’Diaye then equalised just after the half hour mark following a quick break.

The Africans rued the missed chance after a hand ball in the area allowed Paraguay’s Rodriguez to seal victory.

New Zealand and Turkey shared the spoils with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the DY Patil Sports Stadium earlier in the day.

The Turks had the better of the first half, with Ahmed Kutucu’s headed goal from a corner putting them 1-0 in front.

The Kiwis grew into the match after going behind and their goal came just before the hour mark when Elijah Just took a quick free-kick and found Max Mata alone in the box.

Mata, however, ended the game prematurely as he received a second yellow card for leading with an arm five minutes into second-half stoppage time.
