Sweden came out on top against Denmark in their quarter-final match at the International Handball Federation (IHF) Women’s World Handball Championship in Germany.

They made it through to the last four with a 26-23 victory in front of 2,387 people at the Arena Leipzig.

Denmark actually started the stronger and raced into a 5-2 lead after 11 minutes.

However, Sweden rallied to take a 13-11 win into half-time.

This shifted the momentum and Denmark were unable to wrestle the initiative at any stage in the second half, giving Sweden a three-point margin at the death.

Sweden's Hanna Blomstrand was the star of the show with seven goals for her side.

Sweden will now face France in the semi-final following their 25-22 victory over Montenegro in front of 2,019 people at the same venue later in the day.

This match between two Olympic silver medalist teams, France in 2016 and Montenegro in 2012 respectively, was a close contest throughout but it was the sublime performance of French goalkeeper Amandine Leynaud that helped France on their way to victory with several splendid saves.

Being on the losing side was harsh on Montenegro's Katarina Bulatović, who won gold representing Serbia and Montenegro at the 2012 European championships.

She can be proud of her performance having scored an impressive nine goals for her side

Tomorrow sees the second set of quarter-finals played between the Netherlands and the Czech Republic and Norway and Russia.
