Sweden ended the United States' defence of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship after beating the host nation in the semi-finals in Buffalo.

The Swedish team headed into the tie at the KeyBank Center with an unbeaten record in the tournament, but were unable to make a breakthrough in the opening period of the match.

A strike from Elias Pettersson put Sweden in front in the second period, before a deluge of goals in the closing stages of the tie.

Lars Andersson, Oskar Steen and Axel Jonsson Fjallby struck within a three minute period to go 4-0 up, before a late American rally.

The deficit was cut by Kieffer Bellows and Brady Tkachuk, but it proved too late as the US bowed out of the competition with a 4-2 defeat.

Sweden will hope to win the tournament for the first time since 2012, but will face a stern challenge in record 16-times winners Canada.

The Canadian team fell behind early on to the Czech Republic to a goal by Filip Zadina, but efforts from Sam Steel and Drake Batherson turned the match around in the first period.

Canada then began to pull away, as Batherson completed his hat-trick with goals either side of strikes from Maxime Comtois and Jordan Kyrou.

Boris Katchouk made it 7-1 in the third period, before Zadina scored his second of the match to give the Czech Republic a consolation.

Canada will be targeting their first victory at the event since 2015.

There was relief for Denmark after they avoided relegation by winning the second of their best of three play-off against Belarus.

Denmark won the opening match of the play-off 5-4 and ensured their survival with an equally narrow success, edging Belarus 3-2 in the second tie.

The third match will now not go ahead.
