A superb all-round display by Rachin Ravindra powered New Zealand to victory over South Africa today to top Group A at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

The hosts remained unbeaten on the final day of group action at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui to survive their toughest test so far.

New Zealand scored 279 for eight from their allotted 50 overs as Ravindra top scored with 76.

He then took four wickets for 32 runs as South Africa were bowled out for 208 in 46.2 overs.

Hermann Rolfes scored 108 but had precious little support.

West Indies thrashed Kenya by 222 runs in the other game in the group today at Lincoln Green.

Alick Athanaze led the way with an unbeaten 116 as West Indies scored a huge 318 for seven, a score which never looked like being challenged.

Bhaskar Yadram then took five for 18 as Kenya were bowled out for 96.

Both teams failed to progress, though, as South Africa qualified in second despite their defeat.

In today's other matches, Liam Banks scored 120 as his England team thrashed Canada by 282 runs at the John Davies Oval in Queenstown in Group C.

Ireland surprised Afghanistan with a narrow four run win in Group D.

Afghanistan were bowled out for 221 with four balls to spare when just four short of the Irish score.

They progressed to the quarter-finals anyway, though, along with Pakistan, as Sri Lanka and Ireland missed out.
