Both the men's and women's Olympic champion were dumped out of the Badminton World Federation Indonesia Masters on quarter-finals day in Jakarta.

China's Chen Long lost his last eight clash at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno venue with women's Rio 2016 gold medallist Carolina Marin sent packing from the women's competition.

The women's event also saw Japan's world champion Nozomi Okuhara exit while Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu was another casualty.

Spain's Marin, the third seed, was defeated in three by China's He Bingjiao, 21-19, 12-21, 21-16.

He will now play Chinese Taipei's top seed Tai Tzu-ying in the semi-finals, after her comfortable 21-11, 21-8 win over South Korea's Sung Ji-hyun.

Okuhara was beaten by Thailand's former world champion Ratchanok Intanon, 21-17, 21-10.

She will play India's Saina Nehwal who knocked out her compatriot Sindhu 21-13, 21-19.

In the men's event, Rio champion Chen was ousted by unseeded Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

The third seed was beaten 21-11, 16-21, 21-18.

Home hope Ginting will now meet South Korea's fourth seed Son Wan-ho, the best ranked player left in.

Son, a former world number one, came through against another Indonesian in Sony Dwi Kuncoro, 21-14, 21-14.

Chinese Taipei's sixth seed Chou Tien-chen also made the semi-finals as he came from behind to beat Denmark's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 15-21, 21-16, 21-18.

He will play Japan's Kazumasa Sakai who continued his run after benefiting from top seed and world champion Viktor Axelsen's injury withdrawal yesterday.

Sakai won an all-unseeded battle against another Dane in Rasmus Gemke, 21-9, 21-18.

Semi-finals will be played in the Indonesian capital tomorrow.
