Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim lived up to expectations by claiming men's high jump gold on the opening day of the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran.

Barshim was voted International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Athlete of the Year in 2017 after winning the high jump at the IAAF World Championships in London.

The Qatari star was the clear favourite to win the competition at the Aftab-e Enqelab Sports Complex and comfortably delivered for the Iranian crowd.

He would win the competition with a world leading jump of 2.38 metres in the final.

The result gave Barshim a fifth straight title at the event, having previously won at Tehran in 2010, Hangzhou in China in 2012 and 2014 and Doha in 2016.

He was followed by Iran’s Keivan Ghanbarzadeh, who earned the silver medal with a leap of 2.15m.

Qatar’s Hamdi Alamine won bronze by clearing the same height, but having had previous fouls on other heights.

The women’s high jump was won by Uzbekistan’s Nadiya Dusanova, who achieved a clearance of 1.87m.

The podium was rounded off by Iran’s Sepideh Tavakoli and Kazakhstan’s Nadezhda Dubovitskaya, with the pair ending on 1.80m to earn silver and bronze respectively.

Irina Ektova of Kazakhstan won gold in the women’s triple jump final with an effort of 13.79m.

She was followed by India’s Sheena Nellckal Varkey and Thi Thu Thao Bui of Vietnam, who achieved distances of 13.37m and 13.22m respectively.

China enjoyed a one-two in the women’s 800m final, with Chu Yu Wang securing gold in a time of 2min 9.3sec.

Zhiying Hu ended behind her team-mate in 2:10.81 for silver, while Sri Lanka’s Nimail Liyana Arachige secured the bronze in 2:10.83.

Kazakhstan’s Tatyana Nerozak won the women's 3,000m final in a time of 9:33.65, ending 15 seconds clear of her second placed team-mate Gulshanoi Satarova.

Thi Oanh Nguyen of Vietnam secured bronze in 9:48.48.

The event is seen as key to athletes' preparations for the IAAF World Indoor Championships, due to take place in Birmingham between March 1 and 4.
