Malaysia's Mohd Azizulhasni Awang set a new Asian record on home soil in the men's elite sprint competition at the 2018 Asian Track Cycling Championship in Kuala Lumpur.

Awang, who won a bronze medal in the keirin event at the Rio 2016 Olympics, clocked a time of 9.774sec to top the qualification round at the National Velodrome.

Awang's time comfortably beat the previous record of 9.843 secs, which was set by Japan's Nitta Yudai at last year's Championships.

As reported by Malay Mail, after his record-breaking time, Awang said: "My main focus today was to try the best record below 10 seconds and, when I was waiting for my turn, Shah [Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom from Malaysia] beat me to it by becoming the first to record below 10 seconds.

"So, after that, I became more excited.

"Initially, I did not believe that I had set the record because the atmosphere when I ended the race was silent.

"It was as if nothing out of the ordinary had taken place.

"But I was shocked and could not believe my eyes at the time recorded when I saw the electronic screen."

The new record was not Awang’s only achievement today as he managed to clinch a silver medal in the men's 200 metres race, as Japan's Hisashi Watanabe beat him to the gold medal.

Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais also ensured that Malaysia had a successful day in the Para-cycling events as she took the visually impaired 500m time trial crown in a time of 1min 15.177sec.

Mohd Zais expressed her delight at today.s result to Bernama.

"We won all the events," she said.

"We also broke personal records.

"However, we cannot become complacent as we need a more competitive tournament.

"Our target is the World Championship in Brazil.

"We hope that this success will get us there.

"In fact, we are also targeting medals at the Para Asian Games in Indonesia this year."

Her compatriot Nur Syahida Tajudin-Nurul Suhada Zainal was some way behind in the silver medal position with a time of 1:19.024.

Singapore's Emily Lee-Sarah Tan completed the podium line-up thanks to a time of 1:22.317.

Elsewhere, Japanese cyclists continued their impressive form in the competition with Tomohiro Fukaya winning the one kilometre time trial title thanks to a time of 1:01.686.

Chinese Taipei's Hsin Shih Hsiao and Iran's Mohammad Daneshvarkhourram finished second and third in times of 1:01.821 and 1:01.875 respectively.

The competition is set to conclude tomorrow.
