Poland’s Mariusz Prudel and Jakub Szalankiewicz have been crowned winners of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event on Kish Island.

The Polish pairing had justified their pre-tournament third seeding by reaching the semi-final stage at the Kish Marine Recreation Sports Complex.

Prudel and Szalankiewicz produced a strong performance in their last four encounter with Germany's Alexander Walkenhorst and Sven Winter.

They claimed the opening set of the match 21-17 before clinching a nervy second 21-19 to complete the victory.

Latvia’s Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs provided the opposition in the final, winning 21-15, 21-17 against Austria's Julian Horl and Tobias Winter.

The Latvians were hoping to continue their winning streak in Iran, having triumphed at last month’s Beach World Tour event in The Hague.

Their prospects were dealt a blow, though, when Prudel and Szalankiewicz claimed the first set 21-18 in the gold medal match,

A dramatic second set followed, the Polish players narrowly coming out on top by a 24-22 score to complete the victory.

"We are really happy and satisfied because we played a very good game against a very good team," Prudel said.

"That match with Plavins and Tocs was a spectacle.

"It was tough but it had a very nice level."

The bronz medal was earned by Germany’s Walkenhorst and Winter, as they clinched a 21-18, 21-11 win over Austria’s Horl and Winter.

The tournament on Kish Island has long caused controversy as it is only open to male participants and an Iranian law introduced in 2012 supposedly bans women from attending games.

Photographs have emerged, however, showing female fans attending the event.
