World 800 metres champion Pierre-Ambroise Bosse has been charged following an alleged brawl which left him injured last year, according to reports in France.

The 25-year-old Frenchman received "multiple facial fractures" in a "violent assault" which ended his season in August.

One man was then charged after the incident, which took place in a casino car park in Gujan-Mestras.

However, according to France 24, he in turned filed a complaint against Bosse and has accused him of provoking the brawl.

The runner has now been charged with "violence with the use of, or the threatened use of, a weapon that did not cause injuries serious enough to render the victim incapable of work", according to France 24.

Bosse said on Facebook that he was out celebrating the gold medal he won over 800m at last year's World Championships in London.

He claimed he nearly "lost an eye" in the incident.

However, he has now been accused of throwing a beer can during the skirmish, according to regional daily Sud-Ouest.

France 24 report him as saying he finds it "extraordinary to be apparently the aggressor now".

Bosse also won 800m bronze at the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki.
