Bora-Hansgrohe’s Pascal Ackermann won the biggest race of his career today as he sprinted to victory on the final stage at the Tour de Romandie as Primož Roglič completed the formality of securing the overall title.

The 24-year-old German broke from the leading group inside the last 200 metres of the 181.8 kilometres stage from Mont-sur-Rolle to Geneva, the fifth and final leg of this International Cycling Union (UCI) WorldTour event.

He finished in 4 hours 09min 51sec, just clear of Denmark’s Michael Morkov, of Quick-Step Floors and Italy’s Roberto Ferrari, riding for UAE Team Emirates, who were both given the same time.

Slovenia’s Roglič, of Team Lotto NL, took the general classification win as he finished in 17:09:00, eight seconds in front of Sky’s Colombian Egan Bernal.

Australia’s defending champion Richie Porte, riding for BMC, was third at 35 seconds, with Jakob Fuglsang, the Dane riding for Astana who won the fourth stage in fine style, finishing one place off the podium at 1:16.

"I think we are all really happy with this win," said Roglič.

"With the whole team, I think that we showed we are really strong, we have really strong guys and it was a pleasure to work with them and to win in the end."
