Julian Alaphilippe won the first mountain stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné in Lans-en-Vercors as Gianni Moscon overhauled his Team Sky colleague Michal Kwiatkowski to take the overall lead.

Alaphilippe, the home French rider for Quick-Step Floors, was constantly near the front during the 4.8 kilometres summit finish at the end of the 181km stage four from Chazey-sur-Ain.

Team Sky were pushing the pace, but Alaphilippe waited patiently before bursting clear from Great Britain's Geraint Thomas and Ireland's UAE Team Emirates hope Daniel Martin in the final 150 metres.

He crossed in 4 hours 26min 58sec in front of Martin and Thomas.

France and Ag2r La Mondiale's Romain Bardet crossed in fourth, with all of the leading quartet awarded the same time.

Italy's Gianni Moscon finished ninth, eight seconds behind the leader.

Poland's Kwiatkowski slipped behind the leaders in the closing kilometres.

Moscon now leads Kwiatkowski and Thomas by six seconds as Team Sky still hold all the podium positions in the overall standings following their team time trial success yesterday.

Alaphilippe now sits fourth, 48 seconds off the lead.

Action will continue tomorrow with a 130.5km stage from Grenoble to Valmorel.

It will culminate in another summit finish.
