Canada's women recorded their third consecutive victory as the United States were held to a thrilling 5-5 draw by hosts Mexico in the men's tournament at the Hockey Series Open in Salamanca.

The Canadian team maintained their 100 per cent start to the competition by thrashing Mexico 8-1 at the Cancha de Hockey Siglo XXI.

Brienne Stairs, Caashia Karringten and Samantha McCrory all scored twice, while Kathleen Leahy and Danielle Hennig also found the net in another dominant performance from Canada.

The result keeps them in pole position in the women's pool and they are the only team with an unbeaten record so far.

In the other women's match held today, Puerto Rico claimed their second win as they eased to a 5-0 victory over Guatemala.

The US men's side were hoping to continue their winning start to the event but needed two late goals to salvage a draw with Mexico.

The Mexican team started brightly and were two goals up after 15 minutes through Francisco Aguilar and Edgar Garcia.

Deegan Huisman pulled one back for the US before Aguilar's second extended Mexico's advantage to 3-1.

Alexander Grassi then reduced the deficit but it was short-lived as Luis Villegas quickly made it 4-2.

After Jaja Kentwell scored to bring the US back to within one, Aguilar completed his hat-trick to move Mexico to the brink of victory.

But Ajai Dhadwal and William Holt found the net within a minute of each other to earn a dramatic point for the US.

Elsewhere in the men's event, Puerto Rico beat Costa Rica 6-0.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
