Three-time Olympic champion Michael Jung of Germany has been confirmed among the entrants for the upcoming Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) event in Berlin this weekend.

Jung, the reigning Olympic individual eventing champion, is set to make his first appearance on the tour since 2013.

The 35-year-old joins the top four riders on the LGCT ranking for the competition in the German capital.

Britain's Ben Maher, Australian Edwina Tops-Alexander, Harrie Smolders of The Netherlands and Italian Alberto Zorzi occupy the first four places on the overall standings and are likely to be in contention over the weekend.

Maher will aim to extend his 38-point lead over second-placed Tops-Alexander, who is a point further in front of Smolders.

Berlin was added to the LGCT calendar in 2017, with this year's event marking the second time the German capital has hosted a competition on the tour.

"The German capital is also the largest city in the country, steeped in history with famous monuments including the Brandenburg Gate," a spokesperson for the LGCT told the Horse and Hound.

"A new destination for 2017, Berlin had packed grandstands and fans lining the banks of the amphitheatre around the arena for the inaugural show, contributing to a phenomenal atmosphere as home fans witnessed local hero Christian Ahlmann (GER) take the debut LGCT grand prix win.

"This year’s event will again welcome top riders from all over the world, including illustrious names such as Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, Lorenzo de Luca, Olivier Philippaerts, Peder Fredricson, Simon Delestre, Martin Fuchs, Roger-Yves Bost, Maikel van der Vleuten, Pius Schwizer and Sergio Alvarez Moya."

The event begins tomorrow and concludes on Sunday (July 29).
