Spain’s Feliciano López saved three match points to shock Croatia's seventh-seed Borna Ćorić at the Beijing Open.

In the opening matches at the National Tennis Center in the Chinese capital, the wild-card López knocked out Ćorić but Britain's fifth seed Kyle Edmond made it through to the next round in this ATP World Tour 500 series event

López saved three match points in a two hour 45 minute game. 

The final score was 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 and the 37-year-old López is now scheduled to face either Germany’s Mischa Zverev or Filip Krajinović of Serbia in the second round.

Edmund was the highest seed in action on the first day and came back from losing the first set to take the win.

His opponent, Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk, took the first set but Edmund responded in the second and third to win in 91 minutes.

A total of 13 aces helped the Britain to the victory and he is now scheduled to face the winner of tomorrow’s first round match between Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer.

Russia’s Karen Khachanov eased past Sam Querrey of the United States in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Khachanov will now face either the top seed, Juan Martin del Potro from Argentina or Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round.

Elsewhere, Hungary’s Márton Fucsovics also beat his opponent in straight sets, defeating Italy’s Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 6-4.

Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri was also a first round straight sets victor, winning, 6-4, 6-3 against China’s Yibing Wu.

The other match of the day was between Canada’s Vasek Pospisil and Serbia’s Dušan Lajović.

Lajović. came from a set down to take the victory 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
