Defending women's champion Lisa Ashton was dumped out in the first round of the 2019 British Darts Organisation World Championship by Japan's Mikuru Suzuki.

The English second seed was hoping to claim a third consecutive title, and a fifth in all, but was left stunned as Suzuki caused a shock with a 2-0 win.

Both sets went to a final leg with the unseeded Japanese checking out 39 to clinch the first before winning the match on double 10.

Other matches on day one at the tournament's traditional home of the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green in England included a win for men's top seed Mark McGeeney.

The Englishman, who lost last year's final to compatriot and back-to-back winner Glen Durrant, dispatched Dutchman Derk Telnekes 3-1 to progress to round two.

Fifty-eight-year-old Welshman Martin Phillips, a two-time semi-finalist and the 16th seed, was beaten 3-2 by England's Conan Whitehead.
