A key International University Sports Federation (FISU) official has claimed that Krasnoyarsk is now one of the world's best winter sport destinations after hosting the 2019 Winter Universiade this month.

Action at the student event took place in the Russian city between March 2 and 12.

More than 3,000 athletes took part across 11 sports with the host nation dominating the medal table, winning 41 gold medals in a total haul of 112.

This dwarfed the six gold medals second-placed South Korea achieved.

Krasnoyarsk could now host more major winter events as part of the Universiade's legacy.

Roger Roth, FISU's Technical Committee chairman, said: "The highlights of the competitions have been broadcasted all over the world, and now the city of Krasnoyarsk is one of the greatest winter sports centres of the Russian Federation as well as of the world.

"We are looking forward to coming here again and witnessing other international sports events.

"Furthermore, we would like to highlight the fact that this Winter Universiade was one of the best we had in our history and this is owing to the professional approach and knowledge, which were well coordinated."

FISU said the numerous inspection visits made to Krasnoyarsk before the Universiade had paid off in the successful delivery of the event.

Milan Augustin, FISU's Winter Universiade director, said: "Right now, looking back, we can confidently say that the Winter Universiade 2019 has changed Krasnoyarsk and the Krasnoyarsk territory significantly.

"You [local organisers] have done an excellent job hosting one of the best Winter Universiades in history.

"You have successfully implemented all the objectives.

"Everyone could see what real winter was and felt at home.

"The FISU Winter Universiade department was glad to cooperate with you.

"We hope that we will return to Krasnoyarsk and witness other international sports events."
