Slovenia's Ana Umer will not win a third consecutive women's recurve title at the European Field Archery Championships, after suffering pool stage defeat in Mokrice-Catez, Slovenia.

Umer triumphed two years ago in Mokrice-Catez after victory in Rzeszow in Poland in 2015, and was aiming for a third staright title on home soil.

However, she was shocked today at Castle Mokrice by France's Laurena Villard, who won 93-92.

Men's recurve champion Marco Morello from Italy has also suffered an early exit, beaten 96-93 by Croatia's Matija Mihalic.

The two barebow champions also lost, as champions dropped like flies today.

Men's champion Erik Jonsson of Sweden lost 82-78 to Austria's Alois Steinwender, while his compatriot, women's title holder Lina Bjorklund, was beaten 77-75 by Orla O'Connor from the Republic of Ireland.

The compound champions, Croatia's Domagoj Buden in the men's event and Irene Franchini of Italy in the women's competition, begin their campaigns tomorrow after byes to the semi-final stage.

The individual semi-finals take place tomorrow, along with the team finals, before the medal events on Saturday (October 5).

Field archery features a multi-target course on various types of terrain, including fields, woods and forests.
