Gustav Bergman of Sweden claimed the overall men's International Orienteering Federation World Cup title after triumphing in the middle distance race in Guangzhou.

Bergman was the fastest competitor throughout his event, held on a hilly terrain in the last forest race of the World Cup.

He crossed the line in 40min 12sec to clinch victory.

Joey Hadorn of Switzerland and Lucas Basset of France both struggled in the early stages of the race but finished strongly to come second and third, respectively.

Hadorn recorded a time of 41:25, while Basset managed 41:53.

Bergman's compatriot Tove Alexandersson was the victor in the women's middle distance race in 41:33.

She was followed by Natalia Gemperle of Russia in 42:03 and Julia Jakob of Switzerland in 42:28.

Having clinched the women's World Cup title earlier in the year, Alexandersson goes into tomorrow's sprint relay and the individual race on Tuesday (October 29) on track to win every race this season.

The hosts competed despite the recent disqualification of the Chinese men's and women's teams from the World Military Games in Wuhan.

They were unable to threaten the podium, however.
