As the International Olympic Committee and Tokyo 2020 work on the "huge jigsaw puzzle" following the postponement of the Olympic Games because of the coronavirus pandemic, Federations are dealing with the impact on their own calendars.

The majority of those sports on the Olympic programme are due to hold World Championships in 2021, and delaying Tokyo 2020 by a year has sparked a considerable reshuffle.

Governing bodies of 11 sports - basketball, equestrian, football, golf, hockey, karate, rugby, sailing, shooting, tennis, triathlon - on the Tokyo 2020 programme are either not scheduled to hold their World Championships in 2021 or do not hold a standalone event (the annual World Triathlon Series crowns the world champions in the sport, for example).

Below is the current state of play, at the time of writing, for the other 22.

International Swimming Federation (FINA) - FINA has admitted next year's World Championships in Fukuoka, scheduled for July 16 to August 1, will have to be moved to avoid a clash with the Games. The event could be held before or after Tokyo 2020, or pushed back to 2022, a year where the sporting calendar is growing increasingly congested.

World Archery - World Archery had not confirmed the exact timing of its World Championships next year before the postponement of Tokyo 2020 was announced, but it is thought the event will be scheduled for the latter part of 2021. A spokesperson said the organisation would only set dates for the event once the pandemic has passed.

World Athletics - World Athletics quickly shifted its World Championships from 2021 to 2022, and new dates were announced last week. The event in Oregon is now set to run from July 15 to 24.

Badminton World Federation (BWF) - The BWF has confirmed its 2021 World Championships in the Spanish city of Huelva will have to be rearranged as it had been due to take place in August, a direct clash with Tokyo 2020. The BWF is working with organisers in Spain to find an alternative time for the event and it is not yet clear whether it will remain in 2021 or be delayed by a year.

World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) – The World Baseball Classic, the premier men’s competition for the WBSC, is due to take place in March and does not need to be rescheduled at this stage. The next Women’s Softball World Championship is set for 2022.

International Boxing Association (AIBA) - AIBAsuspended as the Olympic governing body for the sport, has signalled a willingness to schedule the Men's World Boxing Championships in 2021 around the new dates for Tokyo 2020. It is unclear when the women's event will be staged.

International Canoe Federation (ICF) – The ICF holds World Championships in each of its Olympic disciplines - slalom and sprint - in each year except for when the Games are held. The ICF is yet to decide on its event calendar for 2021, but the Canoe Slalom World Championships are set to stay in their planned slot in September, around six weeks after Tokyo 2020, while the Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships clash with the Paralympics, so are likely to be moved.

International Cycling Union (UCI) - As part of a revamped cycling calendar, the UCI has shifted the Track Cycling World Championships from its traditional February/March slot to the autumn, and the 2021 event looks destined to be held around October. World Championships in the UCI's other Olympic disciplines - BMX, mountain biking and road - are staged annually and will likely be scheduled with the Olympic dates in mind.

International Fencing Federation - Cairo is due to hold the 2021 World Championships but the dates have not been confirmed, so it could either be postponed to 2022 or organised around the Olympic Games.

International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) - The FIG is planning to stage its flagship Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2021 in the event’s scheduled slot in October. The other Olympic discipline due to hold its World Championships next year is trampolining, which is not likely to be affected as that event is set for Baku in November.

International Handball Federation (IHF) - The Men’s and Women’s World Championships are scheduled for opposite ends of the year. As it stands, the men’s event will remain in January and the women's in December, although the IHF has admitted the men’s tournament could move if the coronavirus pandemic delays construction of venues.

International Judo Federation (IJF) - The IJF has said its World Championships in Tashkent, due to run from September 12 to 19, could be moved forward to be included in the qualification process for Tokyo 2020. The IJF, which holds World Championships every year except for Olympic years, said this had not yet been formally discussed owing to uncertainty caused by the pandemic.

International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) - The UIPM is currently planning its competition calendar for 2021, including its World Championships in Minsk. As with other events, it is likely to be organised either before or after the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games.

World Rowing - Shanghai is hosting the World Rowing Championships in 2021 and the event is due to start around six weeks after the end of Tokyo 2020. World Rowing said it was "exploring" the idea of rescheduling the World Championships, possibly to before the Games.

World Skate (Skateboarding) - World Skate, the governing body for skateboarding at the Olympics, holds the World Skate Games every two years. Argentina is due to host the competition in October and November 2021, and there is currently no suggestion the dates will need to be changed.

International Surfing Association - The World Surfing Games are held every year. The dates and location of the 2021 event have not been announced.

International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) - The IFSC currently does not have any plans to move the 2021 World Championships in Moscow from the event’s allocated slot in September. Concerns over the proximity of the Championships to Tokyo 2020 are allayed by the fact that only 40 climbers will compete when the sport makes its Olympic debut.

International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) - The ITTF holds separate team and individual World Championships in alternating years. Next year is the turn of the individual event, due to take place in the United States in June, but that could change as the Olympics begin just over a month later. ITTF chief executive Steve Dainton has proposed scrapping the individual World Championships in favour of four "Grand Smashes” and retaining the team event in future.

World Taekwondo - Like World Athletics, World Taekwondo acted quickly, confirming its World Championships in Wuxi would be pushed back from May to the latter part of 2021 to accommodate the Olympic Games shortly after the postponement was announced.

International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) - Next year’s Beach Volleyball World Championships have been awarded to Rome but it is not yet clear when the event will be held. A spokesperson for the FIVB said it was "committed to finding the most suitable date based on future events calendar in order to optimise preparation time for athletes and ensure that they can compete at their very best".

International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) - The IWF has an almost identical scenario to the FIVB. The 2021 World Weightlifting Championships are set for Lima, but the dates are currently being reviewed.

United World Wrestling (UWW) - The UWW is set to make history in 2021 by staging its World Championships in the same year as the Olympics. The UWW last week voted to keep the event in Oslo in its planned October slot, but admitted that may change to give athletes more time after Tokyo 2020.
