The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has pledged its support and commitment to Mental Health Awareness Month.

A campaign entitled "We Are Team USA" will contribute to promotion of the awareness month, the USOPC said.

The USOPC has launched a dedicated page on the Team USA website, which provides resources for athletes, coaches and National Governing Bodies, tips from USOPC sport psychologists and references to free community services.

Concerns have been raised over the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on mental health for athletes, many of whom have been unable to train and compete because of COVID-19, and the general public.

The USOPC last month established a mental health taskforce to help athletes, coaches, officials and administrators during the crisis.

"Mental health is of the utmost importance right now," said Bahati VanPelt, USOPC chief of athlete services.

"Given the profound impact of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Games, it's critical that we empower Team USA athletes - and all who support them - to seek assistance and understand how to access available resources.

"Engaging the entire Team USA community is essential to elevating this conversation so, together, we can all do our part to foster well-being."

The US has reported the most deaths and cases of any country in the world.

Over 1.1 million people in the US have been infected with COVID-19 and more than 66,000 have died.
