The United Arab Emirates National Olympic Committee (UAE NOC) has postponed elections for its Executive Board after the body's General Assembly approved a proposal to do so.

The UAE NOC Executive Board last month proposed that the elections be delayed until after the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and that process has now been formally completed.

UAE NOC President Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presided over the General Assembly.

The President is not up for re-election until 2021 as he was given a four-year term in 2017.

Another proposal approved by the General Assembly gives the President the ability to adopt the NOC's charter.

During the meeting, Sheikh Ahmed was said to have emphasised the importance of planning to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and stated his commitment to applying precautionary measures to ensure the safety of all UAE athletes.

The postponement of national and international competitions and how to help athletes stay in shape was also discussed.

Also present at the General Assembly were first vice-president Hamid Al-Qatam, Mohammed bin Salim - secretary general of the UAE NOC - and many representatives of national sports associations, who attended virtually.

Bin Rashid highlighted the necessity to focus on giving the athletes the tools needed to perform at their best as this will further spread a culture of exercise across the country.

He also said he wanted to spread principles of the Olympic Movement such as tolerance, peace and fraternity across the UAE.

In response to the pandemic, the NOC previously postponed the first edition of the UAE Youth Gulf Games from 2021 to 2022.
