World number one Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round of the French Open after sweeping aside Lithuania's Ričardas Berankis at Roland Garros.

Djokovic continued his commanding form at the tournament in Paris by thrashing world number 66 Berankis 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in 83 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

The Serbian, who will face Colombia's Daniel Elahi Galán in the next round, has lost only 10 games in his first two matches.

"Right from the blocks I want to bring in the intensity," Djokovic told Eurosport.

"I managed to do that in the past two matches.

"It's exactly how I want to roll into the match."

Canadian ninth seed Denis Shapovalov crashed out after suffering a shock defeat to Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain.

Baena, the world number 101, battled to a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 8-6 victory to reach the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

The Spaniard's reward is a meeting with 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who beat Slovakian world number 102 Andrej Martin 6-4, 7-6, 6-1.

Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is among the other players through to the third round of the men's draw after he recorded a comfortable 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas.

In the women's draw, 2017 champion Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia earned another scalp on the red clay in the French capital as she defeated second seed Karolína Plíšková of the Czech Republic.

Ostapenko rediscovered some of the form which she displayed on her way to winning the event three years ago in a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The triumph for the Latvian saw her end her poor record at the French Open since lifting the trophy in 2017 - she had been knocked out at the first round stage in 2018 and 2019 - and ensured she booked a meeting with Spain's Paula Badosa.

Badosa also sprang a surprise as she beat 2018 finalist Sloane Stephens of the United States 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, seeded 11th, capped off a poor day for the Plíšková family by seeing off Karolína's sister Kristýna 6-3, 6-2.

Seventh seed Petra Kvitová of the Czech Republic is also through after she overcame Jasmine Paolini of Italy 6-3, 6-3.
