Insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting firm Gallagher has been appointed as the insurance broker for Special Olympics GB, it has been announced.

Gallagher were appointed as insurance broker due to its comprehensive understanding of Special Olympics GB’s strategic goals and the risk and insurance requirements of the organisation.

The strength of the broker’s dedicated charity practice was cited as another factor for its appointment.

"Special Olympics GB offers participants more than just an opportunity to take part in sport – it transforms lives," said Garry Hockey, manager of Gallagher’s charity practice.

"Reinforcing our position as one of the leading insurance brokers operating in the charity sector, we are proud to be building on our relationship with Special Olympics GB by being appointed broker.

"We look forward to supporting the organisation with its risk management and insurance requirements over the coming years, as it seeks to open more doors to inclusion in sport."

Gallagher was announced as a platinum partner of the global Special Olympics movement in March.

The broker is expected to support Special Olympics aim to deliver high-quality training and sport experiences to more than five million athletes in over 240 local programmes across the globe.

Gallagher also looks after more than 8,000 charitable organisations in the UK, from youth clubs and small community-based groups to some of the largest and well-known charities.

Special Olympics GB interim chief operating officer Laura Baxter welcomed the appointment of Gallagher.

Special Olympics GB is the largest provider of year-round, sports coaching and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The organisation currently operates more than 120 accredited clubs in England, Scotland and Wales, providing approximately 27,000 hour-long sporting sessions per year.

The activities are delivered by a team of more than 4,000 volunteers.
