The FIBA admitted the qualification system was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the suspension of its competitions last year.

Only African teams were able to secure their places directly via continental championships.

Egypt and Mali secured qualification for the women's tournament as the top teams at the FIBA Under-18 Women’s African Championship.

The men’s Under-18 African Championship saw Mali and Senegal earn places.

The FIBA said no other continental youth championships were able to take place, with the governing body using the world rankings to determine the remaining qualifiers for the Under-19 World Cups.

Mali and Senegal will be joined at the Men’s Under-19 Basketball World Cup by Americas participants United States, Canada, Argentina and Puerto Rico.

Australia, China, South Korea and Japan will also compete, alongside Spain, France, Lithuania, Turkey and Serbia.

Latvia, the tournament host, complete the 16-team field.

Competition is scheduled to take place from July 3 to 11, with matches held in Daugavpils and Riga.

The Under-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup is set to follow from August 7 to 15.

Hosts Hungary will be joined by African qualifiers Egypt and Mali, as well as European representatives Spain, France, Italy, Russia and the Czech Republic.

The US, Canada, Brazil and Argentina were awarded the Americas spots, while Australia, China, Japan and South Korea will represent the Asia/Oceania region.

Competition will take place in the city of Debrecen.

The US are the defending men's and women's champions.

Their women's team narrowly beat Australia 74-70 in Bangkok to win the event for an eighth time in 2019, while their men's team overcame Mali 93-79 in the men's final at Heraklion in Greece to earn a seventh title.
