Michael Barredo has been named as a new vice-president of the Asian Paralympic Committee following a virtual Executive Board meeting.

The Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PHILSPADA) President was unanimously approved in the post during the two-day meeting, which concluded yesterday.

Barredo has succeeded Jang Hyang Sook, with the South Korean official having had to step down for health reasons.

Barredo previously served for two years as the President of the International Blind Sports Federation.

He also was the founding President of the Philippines National Paralympic Committee and served on the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.

Barredo will continue to serve as the APC's sub-regional representative for South East Asia.

APC President Majid Rashed congratulated Barredo on his appointment and wished Jang well.

"We are sad to say goodbye to Ms. Jang and are very grateful for everything that she has done with us during her time as vice president," Rashed said.

"The APC family send her our very best wishes for the future and pray that she returns to full health soon.

"We are very happy to announce the appointment of Mr. Barredo as the new vice-president replacing Ms. Jang.

"He has played an active role in the growth of the Paralympic Movement in the South Asian region.

"With his vast experience, he is well qualified to take on this new position and we wish him all the very best on this new role."

Barredo will be one of three APC vice-presidents, joining Japan’s Masayuki Mizuno and China’s Zhao Su-jing.

The APC Executive Board decided at the meeting that the organisation’s General Assembly will be held virtually later this year, as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Reports from the upcoming Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Paralympic Games were heard at the meeting, along with a report from Hangzhou 2022 ahead of next year’s Asian Para Games.

"We are very impressed by the progress reports from the Organising Committees including Hangzhou 2022," said Tarek Souei, APC chief executive.

"It shows their readiness and confidence to host one of the best ever Games in the region.

"The legacy has already started and I am sure these Games will set bench mark for the upcoming Games."

Bahrain 2021 also presented ahead of this year’s Asian Youth Para Games.

Reports from the sub regional representatives and sub-committees were also part of the second day’s agenda.
