Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic defeated second seed Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Wimbledon women’s singles final, where she will face Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, the top seed.

Pliskova, the eighth seed, triumphed in three sets against Sabalenka, demonstrating a high quality returning game to blunt the effectiveness of the Belarusian’s serve during a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win that lasted just under two hours.

Pliskova squandered eight break point chances during the first set and was made to pay as Sabalenka pounced in the 12th game, with a double fault a disappointing way for the Czech player to drop a set for the first time at this year’s Championships.

Pliskova broke in the fifth game of the second set with a trademark return off a Sabalenka second serve and it proved the difference in a set that showcased an impressive serving display by both women.

An early break went Pliskova’s way in the decider and she kept her nerve to seal victory with an ace.

Pliskova, in her second Grand Slam final, will take on Barty, after the 2019 French Open champion overcame 2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, beating the 25th seed from Germany 6-3, 7-6.

An early break of serve helped Barty take set one 6-3, and it looked as though the contest was going the distance when Kerber established a 5-2 lead in set two.

The German was broken to love as she attempted to serve it out, and after forcing a tiebreak Barty dominated the breaker winning it by seven points to three.

Today’s victories for Barty and Pliskova mean that for the first time since 1977, the two competitors playing for the Venus Rosewater Dish are both first time finalists at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
