Number one seed Nino Batsiashvili of Georgia has started the European Individual Women's Chess Championship with a victory on the opening day of competition, defeating Andreea Navrotescu of France.

In the Swiss-system tournament - where players face 11 opponents - the world number 16 leads a contingent of three Georgians vying for the title in Iasi in Romania.

Second seed and compatriot Bela Khotenashvili could not start in a similar winning fashion, as her game with Bulgarian 60th seed Beloslava Krasteva ended in a stalemate.

Third seed Lela Javakhishvili added a second Georgian win with a victory over 61st seed Alessia-Mihaela Ciolacu of Romania.

The fourth seed Gunay Mammadzada of Azerbaijan defeated Armenian 62nd seed Maria Gevorgyan, and fifth seed Anastasia Bodnaruk of Russia won against Serbian 63rd seed Marina Gajcin.

Israeli sixth seed Marsel Efroimski won against 64th seed Zala Urh of Slovenia, and eighth seed Olga Girya started with a win over Russian compatriot Elena Semenova.

Seventh seed Meri Arabidze of Georgia started with a stalemate against Armenian 65th seed Susanna Gaboyan.

The biggest upset on day one saw 75th seed Yulia Grigorieva of Russia defeat Hungarian 17th seed Hoàng Thanh Trang.
