The Czech Republic's Katerina Mrazova has expressed hope her team can secure a medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women's World Championship.

The Czechs will feature in Group B of the tournament, alongside Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Japan.

The top three in Group B will earn quarter-final spots.

They will join the Group A teams Canada, the United States, Finland, Switzerland and the Russian Olympic Committee, who are assured of places in the last eight.

The Czech Republic reached the quarter-finals in 2016 and 2019, with the nation losing to Finland on both occasions.

Finland triumphed 3-1 in the 2019 quarter-finals, before going on to win the silver medal at the event.

Mrazova, the newly-crowned Czech women’s hockey player of the year, hopes the team can challenge for a medal at this year’s event.

"Our overall goal would be to medal," Mrazova told the IIHF website.

"I think we have the team for it.

"In the past, when we came to Worlds, it was like, ‘Let’s not finish last.’

"Our mentality in the team has changed a lot."

The delayed event will take place at the WinSport Arena at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

The IIHF announced Calgary as the new host city for the tournament in June, after Nova Scotia's Government pulled out of staging the event in April.

Nova Scotia's withdrawal came less than a month before the event was due to start on May 6.

The 10 competing nations entered a tournament bubble on August 10, with organisers confirming on Tuesday (August 17) that 1,557 negative COVID-19 Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were recorded among all players, team staff, game officials and IIHF staff.

The Czech Republic will also have an eye on the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, with the nation due to host Hungary, Norway and a yet-to-be-determined nation in a qualifier in November.

The Czech Republic has not participated in the six previous Olympic women’s hockey tournaments.
