Sochowicz is recovering in hospital after undergoing knee surgery following the incident at the Yanqing National Sliding Centre, which is being investigated by Beijing 2022 organisers and the FIL.

The 25-year-old crashed into a closed barrier that should have been open after he had been given the green light.

He cut his right leg to the bone in the accident and was taken to hospital.

In a statement, the FIL said the "set-up of blockades at a start height once training moves to the other start" was among the enhanced safety measures put in place in response to the crash.

Organisers are also working to "identify the exact position of the switch/barrier" following a review.

Sochowicz alleged the track team "showed great incompetence" in responding to the crash, which he said would have been worse had he not sought evasive action to try and avoid the closed barrier.

"All parties involved feel very sorry for Mateusz Sochowicz and the Polish team and continue to do their best to safeguard the athletes' safety and do anything to avoid such incidents in the future," the FIL said in a statement.

"FIL, together with the Local Organising Committee and Beijing 2022, will now make sure that Sochowicz receives the best available medical treatment while in China and after his return to Poland too in view of a speedy recovery."

Beijing 2022 said the FIL and the venue operational team "carried out a thorough check of the track and adapted the arrangement of the training" after the crash.

Sochowicz, who is still hoping to compete at Beijing 2022, is set to return to Poland on a chartered flight "as soon as possible," the FIL said.

The FIL met with Beijing 2022, the venue's owner and team officials from the Polish Luge Federation to discuss the incident today.

Juan Antonio Samaranch, chair of the International Olympic Committee's Coordination Commission for Beijing 2022, admitted lessons would be learned from the incident but insisted there was "plenty of time" to implement them in time for the Beijing 2022 Opening Ceremony on February 4.

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed during a training accident on the day of the Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony.

Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled during the final turn on the Vancouver 2010 track at Whistler.

The track was described as too fast and too dangerous by some officials and competitors.
