World Championship silver medallist Adrian Pertl has been ruled out of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics after sustaining a season-ending knee injury.

Pertl hit a gate during the first run of the men’s giant slalom World Cup competition in Val d'Isere on Saturday (December 11).

The 21-year-old fell after hitting the gate and sustained a knee injury.

The Austrian Ski Federation has confirmed the injury will rule him out of the remainder of the season.

"After a detailed examination, a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament and a meniscus injury in the right knee was diagnosed," the Austrian Ski Federation said yesterday.

"The slalom vice world champion is still operated on in Hochrum today and is out for the rest of the season."

Pertl was expected to make his first appearance at the Winter Olympics at Beijing 2022.

He had enjoyed a breakthrough result last season by winning silver in the men’s slalom event at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Cortina.

Pertl had led after the first run at the World Championships but ultimately finished as the runner-up to Norway’s Sebastian Foss-Solevåg.

Henrik Kristoffersen, also from Norway, completed the podium places.

Pertl has earned one World Cup podium to date in his career, with the Austrian having finished third in a slalom event in Chamonix in 2020, and was crowned junior slalom world champion back in 2017, triumphing at Åre in Sweden.

Sochi 2014 Olympic super-G champion Kjetil Jansrud was also ruled out of the Winter Olympics in Beijing earlier this month, after sustaining knee ligament damage in a crash at Beaver Creek in the United States.
