Johannes Thingnes Bø of Norway, the defending International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup champion, has won his first race of the season in Annecy Le Grand-Bornand in France, ending a run of 17 races without victory.

He kept a clean shooting record in the men's 10-kilometre sprint to take the victory in 23min 30.3sec and end a lengthy streak without a gold in either World Cup or World Championships competition. 

Bø has 53 race wins to his name now on the World Cup circuit.

He finished 7.2 seconds in front of Russian Eduard Latypov and a further 11 in front of bronze medallist Filip Fjeld Andersen, the young talent from Norway.

Andersen, 22, sealed his first podium by holding off Frenchman Quentin Fillon Maillet by three seconds, after he was forced to take a penalty lap.

Sturla Holm Lægreid of Norway completed the top five.

Anton Smalski of Belarus, Émilien Jacquelin of France, Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen of Norway, World Cup leader Sebastian Samuelsson of Sweden and South Korea's Timofei Lapshin rounded off the top 10.
