Egyptian Nour Ahmed Youssri and Nigeria's Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori secured unexpected titles today at the All Africa Individual Badminton Championships in Kampala.

Ahmed Youssri triumphed over compatriot Doha Hany in the women's singles final 21-16, 21-16 in the Ugandan capital.

Prior to the tournament, Hany was the firm favourite as she was the highest-ranked player at 93rd in the world.

Nevertheless, Ahmed Youssri, who sits 123 places lower, breezed past Hany in 29 minutes.

She beat another Egyptian in Hana Tarek Zaher in the semi-finals.

It was another straight-games victory with the score 21-11, 21-13.

Hany beat Uganda's Husina Kobugabe 21-18, 22-20 in the final four as she went in search of her first singles title in the event.

Hany lost in the 2021 final to Johanita Scholtz of South Africa and also has three bronze medals from 2020, 2019 and 2018.

In the men's singles, Opeyori avenged his loss in the 2020 final with a thrilling 21-14, 23-21 win over Brian Kasirye of Uganda.

It his second individual gold medal at the event after taking the 2019 title following a win against countryman Godwin Olofua in that final.

Opeyori had beaten 2017 champion Adel Hamek of Algeria in convincing fashion with a 21-18, 21-18 semi-final triumph.

Kasirye knocked out defending champion Adham Hatem Elgamal 21-17, 16-21, 21-15 in an exhilarating back-and-forth affair.

Algerians Youcef Sabri Medel and Koceila Mammeri beat Elgamal and his compatriot Ahmed Salah in the men's doubles final, while Mauritius' Lorna Bodha and Kobita Dookhee took gold in the women's doubles after beating Amy Ackerman and Deidre Laurens Jordaan of South Africa.

Algeria's Tanina Mammeri and Koceila Mammeri then took the mixed doubles crown after inflicting defeat to Ackerman and Jarred Elliott.
