Russian city Syktyvkar was due to stage the event from March 27 to April 3.

But the war in Ukraine resulted in Sweden and Finland boycotting the tournament before the FIB announced the postponement.

The FIB has also decided to postpone the under-17 World Championships, due to be held in Kemerovo in Russia from March 24 to 26 and said Russian teams would not participate in three tournaments due to take place in Sweden.

Among those includes the Women’s World Championships, planned to be staged from March 23 to 27.

The FIB made no mention of Russia’s military assault on Ukraine in its statement but cited the "recommendations from international sports organisations" as the reason for the decisions.

The IOC has urged worldwide governing bodies to ban athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus from all international sporting events in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

It has also recommended that the International Federations relocate or cancel events planned in the two countries.

Speaking to Russia’s official state news agency TASS, FIB President Boris Skrynnik said he would continue to lead the organisation.

"I'm not going to suspend my Presidency," said Skrynnik who led FIB since 2006.

"If someone wants, let them gather a quorum, and I'll suspend it."

The Men’s World Championships was due to have been held in Syktyvkar in 2021 only to be moved to this year due to COVID-19 concerns.

Last October, it was announced that the 2020 World Championships due to have taken place in Russian city Irkutsk, would be postponed for a second time due to the COVID-19 crisis and re-allocated dates in October 2022 after the Syktyvkar staging.

Russia was banned from hosting major events such as World Championships by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sanctions, initially for four years, until this was halved by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in December 2020.

The CAS ruling said Russia should be stripped of any events it already has the right to host "unless it is legally or practically impossible to do so."

But in June 2021, the Federation of International Bandy (FIB) received approval for an exemption to the CAS sanctions against the host country.

WADA confirmed the FIB had received an exemption for its World Championship, citing the postponement from 2020 to 2021 and the lack of interest and facilities from other nations in hosting the event.
