Around 1,500 dogs and 150 dog handlers from 25 nations participated in the International Federation of Sleddog Sports (IFSS) and World Sleddog Association (WSA) Sprint and Mid-Distance Sleddog World Championships in Östersund.

The event in the Swedish city was missing any competitors from Russia and Belarus after the IFSS voted to follow the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendation and ban them following the invasion of Ukraine.

Germany’s Angelika Merkel was the winner in the 8-dogs-1 13.60km category ahead of Roderrick Glastra of The Netherlands and Michal Markiel of Poland.

In the 6-dogs-1 12.40km category Poland’s Mikolja Wlodarczyk came home first ahead of Finland’s Maki-Arvela Sampsa and third-placed Olivia Placentin-Filoni of Italy.

The 4-dog-1 8.20km event went to Nabila Spampanato of Italy, with Mariet Joosten of The Netherlands second and third place going to Vickie Pullin of Britain.

The 4-dog-2 8.20km event was won by Germany’s Rolf Ewald, with second place going to Belgium’s Jonathan Benois and third place to Francesco Biagiotti of Italy.

The 2-dogs-1 4.23km event was won by Irene Ax of Sweden, with second place going to Germany’s Ann-Kathrin Schmitt and Italy’s Valentina Durio third.

The 2-dogs-2 4.23km title went to Gilles Olivier of Belgium, who finished ahead of Matt Hodgson of Britain and Francesco Biagiotti of Italy.
