Despite finishing outside the top-10 in fencing and swimming, the Briton took third in riding and second in laser run to overtake fourth-placed Elodie Clouvel of France for the final spot on the podium.

Clouvel finished top of the standings in swimming, while Natalia Dominiak of Poland finished fifth, aided by a win in riding.

Sixth-placed Rebecca Langrehr of Germany topped the standings in fencing, while Britain's Jessica Varley moved up to 13th with the fastest laser run time.

Patte finished in front of the Hungarian pair Csaba Bohm and Balazs Szep for the men's gold with a total of 1,487.

The Frenchman's top performance was second in riding.

Bohm was third in both swimming and riding - as well as fourth in the laser run - but was down in 16th in fencing for a total of 1,481.

Szep was four more points back for the bronze medal, overtaking Italian Matteo Cicinelli with a victory in the laser run.

Cicinelli was first in swimming and second in fencing, but struggled on the laser run.

France's Valentin Belaud completed the top-five.

Emiliano Hernandez of Mexico was seventh after winning the riding section; while Egyptian Hamed Ahmed took the fencing victory, but struggled elsewhere, finishing 13th overall.
