South Korea edged into the quarter-finals of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Women's Junior World Cup despite suffering their second pool phase defeat in Potchefstroom.

South Korea and Uruguay headed into the final Pool C matches seeking to join Argentina in the last eight stage of the competition.

Austria were able to spring a surprise against South Korea, with the European side bouncing back from defeats in their opening two matches.

Helene Herzog scored the only goal of the match in the 56th minute, with the 1-0 loss leaving South Korea sweating on the outcome of Uruguay’s clash with Argentina.

Uruguay needed to avoid a defeat by three goals to earn a quarter-final spot, but their prospects suffered a heavy blow when Sol Pagella and Valentina Raposo gave Argentina a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Maria Adorno and Catalina Andrade added further goals as Argentina completed a 4-0 victory, leaving the defending champions heading into the quarter-finals with three wins to their name and no goals conceded.

South Korea finished second on goal difference in front of Uruguay and Austria, with the three teams ending with a record of one win and two defeats.

Pool D action concluded with India recording their third consecutive win.

A hat-trick from Mumtaz Khan and a strike from Sangita Kumari gave India a 4-0 victory over Malaysia.

Jette Fleschutz and Mia Sippel both scored twice as Germany overcame Wales 8-0, with the team advancing as Pool D runners-up.

Quarter-final matches are due to be held on Friday (April 8), with hosts South Africa facing Pool B winners the Netherlands.

The winner of the fixture is then set to play either India or South Korea in the semi-finals.

Pool A winners England are due to take on Pool B runners-up United States, with Argentina due to face Germany in the last quarter-final.

Classification matches are scheduled to be held at the tournament for nations that missed out on the quarter-finals.
