Canada's Karla Godinez Gonzalez claimed notable scalps including defending continental and world champion Jacarra Winchester en route to gold on the second day of wrestling's Pan American Championships in Acapulco.

Competing in the women's freestyle 55 kilograms category in Mexico, the country of her birth, Godinez beat Ecuador's under-23 world champion Lucia Yepez Guzman 4-2, before trouncing Peru's Nadia Trujillano La Ros 11-0 in the semi-finals.

Guzman faced a tough challenge against Winchester of the United States in the final, but stunned her opponent 8-5 to clinch gold at the Hotel Expo Mundo Imperial.

Yepez eased past Trujillano La Ros 10-0 to claim bronze.

Another Canadian wrestler triumphed in Acapulco, as Laurence Beauregard reclaimed the women's 59kg title which she previously won in 2019.

Silver went to Mexican home favourite Ameyalli Jessel Rojas, with the United States Xochitl Mota-Pettis securing bronze.

The other two women's freestyle golds went to the US, adding to their four in the Greco-Roman category yesterday.

World Championships bronze medallist Forrest Molinari secured her second Pan American Championships victory in the 65kg weight division, with silver going to Miki Rowbottom of Canada and Atzimba Landaverde Moreno of Mexico rounding off the podium.

Molinari's compatriot Skylar Grote came out on top in the 72kg class, with Brazil's Brenda Aguiar Dos Santos and Mexico's Maria Garcia Bautista taking silver and bronze respectively.

The Greco-Roman competitions drew to a close today, with Cuba winning two further gold medals.

There was agony for Guatemala's Reinier Jiminez Terry in the 82kg final, who missed out on the country's first ever Greco-Roman gold at the Championships after his bout against Mexico's Daniel Vicente Gomez finished 1-1.

The US' Tyler Cunningham took bronze at the expense of Colombia's Nestor Tafur.
